In today’s extension of the week video, we discuss an extension that allows us to create 3D meshes from 2D bitmap files!

Where can you get it?
You can download it from the SketchUp extension warehouse
Tool functions:
This is a very simple tool – it basically contains two functions – mesh from heightmap and mesh from bitmap.
Mesh from heightmap allows you to take Bitmap heightmap files, and import them in order to create terrains from the heightmaps. A heightmap is basically an image used to store height values.

BMP to mesh will allow you to read these files and create a heightmap from them.
Simply go up and select “mesh from heightmap,” set a base point to place your image, then move your mouse up and down to select how much height you want to add.
PLEASE NOTE VERY IMPORTANT – This extension creates a LARGE amount of geometry, so I wouldn’t try bringing in super resolution images.
If you right click, you set the option of “Create solid
If anything, you may want to try reducing the resolution to cut back on the amount of geometry produced.
In addition, you can also use it to create geometry from the individual pixels of an image as well if you decide you want to do that.
